We are positioned to enure equity in global health partnerships. We encourage the implementarion of the Douala Equity Checklist as a 20-item tool HIC and LMIC institutions can use throughout the conduct of global health projects to ensure more equitable collaborations
1. The Colorado-Zimbabwe International Exchange (CoZIE) program fosters exchanges between the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences. It aims to enhance internal medicine practice, teaching, and research.·
2. The Center for Global Health, in partnership with Children's Hospital Colorado and AgroAmerica, created the Trifinio Center for Human Development to promote population health and sustainable development in an extremely poor, rural region of southwest Guatemala.
3. The Colombia Tropical Medicine Program offers rotations covering various infectious diseases in Cali, Colombia.
4. In Iquitos, Peru, tropical medicine courses and clinical rotations are available at Loreto Hospital.
5. The MRRH Palliative Care program in Uganda provides home care to around 200 patients, recognized for its culturally respectful services.
6. The 2024 Agaro Bushi Medium Clinic in Ethiopia serves a population of about 180,000
7. The Global Health Hospital Medicine Scholars Program trains future hospitalist-leaders through a one-year program combining international work with training in Colorado.
The DOM Global Health Education oversees global health education initiatives. We offer exchanges for students, residents, and fellows globally. Our faculty collaborate worldwide to develop a skilled global health workforce and enhance national health systems.
Global Health Hospital Medicine Scholars Program: A one-year program trains hospitalist-leaders for resource-limited settings, combining international experience with training in Colorado. It's designed for internal medicine graduates pursuing careers in global health and underserved populations in academic medicine.
Recent Research:
- Annual risks for arrhythmias and stroke for chronic chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) were 1.6% and 0.8%, respectively. The yearly mortality and hospitalization rates for CCC were 2.7% and 17.1%, respectively. Only 13 patients had a documented antitrypanosomal therapy course within 6 months after diagnosis. Of those receiving treatment, 10 patients received benznidazole and three nifurtimox. Chagas disease screening in patients from endemic areas living in the US remains crucial.
- Latent Toxoplasma gondii associates with a higher overall mortality risk. The study of social determinants of health and follow-up studies are necessary to corroborate the findings and find possible causal mechanisms.
- Recent Nipah Virus outbreak in India: Lessons and Imperatives
Clinical Activity:
- University of Zimbabwe med school Cardiology telehealth program. Dr. Mark Keller has done over 5,000 echocardiograms and an equal number of ECGs. These studies are loaded on the cloud and interpreted here in Colorado and results returned to Zimbabwe. Dr Ab El Rafei and Dr David Raymer are also involved, as well as a cardiologist at Rose. Dr Vijay Subbarao. The program received a seed grant in the Gate’s foundation a year ago and are trying to expand the program.

Resources:
- The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is handled by Alana Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor. This office is responsible for coordinating matters pertaining to students, residents, trainees, and medical doctors who travel outside the US. Additionally, the OIA has established Memoranda of Understanding with both our external and internal partners, facilitating projects, procedures, and business agreements.

- Refugee mental health program: We provide mental health services with culturally-informed approaches, educate healthcare providers about caring for immigrants and refugees, and increase professional and public awareness of immigrant and refugee community needs.
